Wooden Floorboards
Many secondhand trailers are equipped with wooden
floorboards and if not maintained properly, they are susceptible to rot and
decay. The last thing you want on while traveling is your load falling throughout
the floor.
Aluminum Floors
Unlike wooden floorboards, aluminum can suffer from rust and
deterioration if not maintained properly. Don’t forget the condition of the
cross members under the floor. This provides the integrity of the trailer, so
any signs of corrosion are a cause of concern.
Tyres
The condition of the tyres is also important when buying a
secondhand trailer. Tyres can provide information about the trailer. Uneven
tyre wear can mean a bent axle which could be serious problems. Incorrect tyres
can also affect the trailer which results in accidents when you’re on the road.
Brakes
Another thing you should consider is the braking wiring.
Have the trailer hooked up to a towing vehicle so you can see that the light
indicators are working properly. Connect the trailer and the towing vehicle to
ensure the compatibility of both ends.
Dents
The external parts should be free of serious dents. Some
wear and tear is inevitable when on the road. Lookout for small pinholes and
crumbling powder around and outside the trailer as this is a sign of aluminum corrosion.
Rust and Cracks
Rust and cracks are easy to spot but make sure that the
hitch mechanism is free of rust and cracks.
If you are not sure with the trailer you are buying, make
sure to hire a mechanic or someone who’s an expert when it comes to trailers.
Make sure that you ask about the history of the trailer from the previous
owners and if they have a record of the maintenance routine of the trailer.
